Bone Health Optimization for Spine Surgeons
Strong, healthy bones provide a sturdy foundation for the spine, ensuring stability and proper biomechanics. However, various factors like osteoporosis, age-related bone loss, and nutritional deficiencies can weaken bones, making them more susceptible to fractures and complications during spinal surgery.
Optimizing spine health before surgery is a crucial step for improving patient outcomes and reducing complications, which includes a thorough bone health assessment given the high prevalence of osteoporosis in patients undergoing spine surgery (27-75% of women and 18-26% of men). There is a high need to help spine surgeons increase patient outcomes by educating them on the importance of bone health optimization in surgical patients.
Therefore, this session that will be presented by members of the Spine Health Foundation Spine & Bone Health Task Force will provide a comprehensive review of the connection between spine and bone health/osteoporosis, given that spine surgeries intersect many patients with osteoporosis.
