Scripps Clinic
Greg Mundis, MD currently resides in San Diego, California with his wife, Lesley, and their four children. He is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Scripps clinic and serves as the Director of the San Diego Spine Fellowship Program. He subspecializes in complex pediatric and adult spine surgery at Scripps Green Hospital and is the acting Chief of Spine Trauma at Scripps Memorial La Jolla. In 2024 he was named President of the San Diego Spine Foundation (SDSF).
Leadership and helping others achieve Peak Performance are his passion. Dr. Mundis has helped the SDSF spine fellowship grow from just one fellow per year 15 years ago to now training 4 fellows per year. He is also a strong advocate of producing the best spine surgeons regardless of residency training in orthopedic vs. neurosurgery and actively trains both specialties every year. He holds leadership positions locally, as the vice president of SDOS, as well as board positions with SMISS, and the treasurer of the SRS. His passion for both leadership and Peak Performance led to the creation of a yearly conference called Bridging the Gap (bridgingthegap-sd.com), a meeting designed to help surgeons and the greater spine community find whole hearted living through relationship, communication, team building and self-care.
Research is a very important to Dr. Mundis’ practice. He is an active member of ISSG and PSSG. Furthermore, he has been involved in research and development of spine related implants where he currently holds more than 20 patents. Because of these efforts, he is a frequently invited lecturer nationally and internationally and has given more than 175 such talks. His research has been accepted for podium presentations around the world over 490 times and has served as an author or co-author on 20 book chapters and 360 peer-reviewed publications. He has organized and chaired 24 national and international meetings and hosted traveling fellowships on 13 occasions.
As the son of a Missionary family, Dr. Mundis has found his true passion to be serving children in need This passion has led him to serve and operate in numerous countries on 5 different continents including China, Cyprus, Kenya, Brazil, Mexico as well as in San Diego. His most recent efforts have been in conjunction with Global Spine Outreach. His work with GSO has provided opportunity for his family to be involved in outreach and they frequently accompany him on these trips. During a period of financial duress and mission stagnation, Dr. Mundis was asked to step in as CEO of this non-profit organization to help lead, team build, and achieve peak performance and was able to help GSO quadruple in size and become cash positive by reorganizing the structure of the missions and passionately recruiting teams to execute the mission of GSO. GSO provides free care for children across South America eight times per year, helping over 120 children every year to access life altering services for their spinal deformities.
