Julie L. Chan, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida. She completed her neurosurgery residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she developed a strong foundation in both clinical excellence and translational research. During her dedicated research year, Dr. Chan investigated the use of 3D-printed models to promote stem cell regeneration, as well as stem cell–based therapies for degenerative disc disease. She subsequently completed a complex spine fellowship at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. Zoher Ghogawala, with a focus on spine outcomes research.
Dr. Chan is deeply committed to education, mentorship, and the advancement of neurosurgery. She serves as a Spine Assistant Editor for Neurosurgery and as a Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. She is also actively involved in research committees for both the Cervical Spine Research Society and the Lumbar Spine Research Society. At the University of Florida, Dr. Chan is the Director of the UF Bone Health Clinic for Spine Surgery and the Founder and Director of the Spine Outcomes Research Volunteer Program for high school and undergraduate students.
Her research interests center on spine outcomes, with particular emphasis on osteoporosis and the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. As a complex spine neurosurgeon, Dr. Chan treats a broad spectrum of spinal disorders, including degenerative, neoplastic, and traumatic conditions. Her surgical practice encompasses open, minimally invasive, and motion-preservation techniques.
