Dr. Butala specializes in the delivery of spine stereotactic radiosurgery and is the Director of the Spine Radiotherapy Program and Chief of the Palliative Radiotherapy service at the University of Pennsylvania. He also co-leads the Spine Oncology (SOaR2) program.
The SOaR2 program, initiated more than 10 years ago, was established with the stated goal of improving the care of patients with spinal neoplastic processes. The program has focused on all elements of care from the onset of symptoms through the return to community. We have shortened time to evaluation, time to diagnosis, time to treatment, and, perhaps most importantly, time to completion of all treatments. Further, our focus on reducing the impact of our treatments on each patient has yielded dramatic results.
Currently the program evaluates 12-20 patients per week in our multi-disciplinary conference (Surgical Spinal Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Anesthesia Pain Management, Interventional Radiology, and Palliative Care). Direct patient evaluation is undertaken in a co-located clinic (Radiation Oncology, Surgical Spinal Oncology). Surgical and radiation treatments are undertaken at the University of Pennsylvania. Complex radiation plans are designed by a dedicated spine physics team. Advanced clinical care, quality improvement, and research is undertaken by our multi-disciplinary program.
