Texas A&M University, EnMed
Drew Schindler, BS is a current third year medical student with specific interests in medical innovation and spine surgery at the Texas A&M School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed), a dual-degree program where he will receive a combined M.D. and M. Eng degree. He has a broad foundation of medical innovation including an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering with a biomedical specialization, industry experience prior to medical school as a product development engineer for a spinal surgical device company, and his current training in the biodesign process at EnMed. Schindler's time in industry exposed him to all aspects of the design process, including patenting intellectual property, submitting for FDA clearance, overseeing mechanical testing, and managing the regulatory pathway for new products. In his role as a R&D engineer, he led the design and development of a posterior cervical fixation system and was also heavily involved in the design and testing of a novel anterior lumbar interbody fusion system. Since the start of medical school, he has been involved in numerous neurosurgical research projects and he looks forward to applying to a neurosurgical residency program upon finishing medical school. When he’s not in the classroom, clinic, or collaborating on engineering projects, Schindler enjoys spending time outdoors, playing basketball and performing with his cello.
