John H. Shin, M.D., M.B.A., is the Chief of Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery and Executive Director of the Penn Spine Center at Penn Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is the inaugural Guggenheim Family – Thomas W. Langfitt, M.D. Endowed Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Shin administers and leads spine-related strategy, operations, and business development for the health system. He specializes in spinal reconstruction surgery for deformities of the spine and tumors. Dr. Shin is known for successfully developing and launching clinical and research programs, fostering multi-disciplinary collaborations, and pioneering surgical innovations.
Dr. Shin serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Neurosurgery, and Spine. He is currently the Associate Editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine Editorial Board. He is frequently invited to teach and train spine surgeons around the world at meetings and universities. He has directed spine courses for professional societies including the North American Spine Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, AO Spine, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the AANS/CNS Division of Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He is the 2025 Scientific Program Co-Chair for the North American Spine Society Annual Meeting. He currently serves on the Executive and Scientific Planning Committees and is Chair of the Exhibits and Industry Relations Committee for the AANS/CNS Division of Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He is past Chair of the Media Committee.
Dr. Shin is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
