Abhinav Sharma, M.D. is an orthopaedic surgery resident physician with research interests in biomechanical, clinical, and translational science. He completed his undergraduate studies at Emory University and subsequently worked in a biomechanics laboratory at the National Institutes of Health, where he helped develop a robotic exoskeleton and rehabilitation protocols for children with spastic gait cerebral palsy. As a medical student at University of California, Los Angeles, he investigated the molecular basis of fibroadipogenesis in chronic rotator cuff tears and collaborated with paleontologists at the La Brea Tar Pits to study hip arthritis in a Smilodon specimen. He later completed a dedicated research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery studying the hip–spine relationship in total hip arthroplasty, contributing to award-winning research including The Hip Society’s 2021 Otto Aufranc Scientific Award. He is currently completing his residency at the University of California, Irvine, where he continues outcomes-based clinical research in spine surgery supported by multiple research grants and national awards.
