Mahnoor Shafi, MBBS
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Johns Hopkins Medical Institute
Mahnoor Shafi is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she works in the Spinal Fusion Laboratory within the Department of Neurosurgery. Her academic journey is driven by a strong commitment to advancing neurosurgical science through translational and outcomes-focused research.
Mahnoor’s interest in neurological surgery began during medical school, where she undertook extensive clinical rotations in the Department of Neurosurgery at Khyber Teaching Hospital. While immersed in a predominantly clinical environment, she demonstrated early initiative to pursue research beyond traditional pathways. This led her to genomic research at the Khyber Medical University Public Health Reference Laboratory, in collaboration with Monash University, where she explored molecular and population-level approaches to disease despite institutional barriers in a clinically focused setting.
After graduating from Khyber Medical University in 2022, Mahnoor pursued advanced research training in the United States. She was recruited by the Computational Neurosciences Outcome Center (CNOC) at Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School, where she gained foundational experience in neurosurgical outcomes research and large-scale data-driven investigations.
She subsequently joined the Mayo Clinic as a Research Temporary Professional in a neurosurgery translational laboratory, focusing on innovative tissue-engineering strategies for bone and cartilage regeneration in spinal pathologies. During her time at Mayo Clinic, she contributed to multiple multidisciplinary projects while maintaining active collaborative ties with CNOC.
Building on this experience, Mahnoor transitioned to Johns Hopkins University, where she now leads research efforts within the Spinal Fusion Laboratory. She continues to collaborate with both Mayo Clinic and CNOC, integrating translational science, regenerative medicine, and outcomes research to advance the field of neurosurgery.
Mahnoor aspires to pursue neurosurgery residency training, with the long-term goal of becoming a surgeon-scientist who bridges rigorous research with clinical excellence. She is deeply committed to advancing spine care and improving patient outcomes through innovation, collaboration, and service to humanity.
